How to edit a page in the CMS
To edit content in an existing page you need to have permissions on your login account which allow you to edit content and then you can take the following steps:
- Login as normal which will leave you at the logged in page in Live Mode with the "heads-up" display top left for accessing controls
- Navigate the site as usual to find the page you wish to edit and then choose 'Edit Page' from the "heads-up" display
- This will load the page editor and you will find yourself on the "English" tab with four fields with content ready for you to make changes
The fields and the other tabs provide you with the following:
- The 'Title' field is the full name of the page as it appears at the top of the centre column and also at the top of the browser window
- The 'Menu Title' field is the short version which prevents it overflowing in the right hand column of subsection links and also in the breadcrumb trail links
- The 'Summary' field is the text which will be displayed as the search result description when people are searching the site and this page is returned
- The 'Body' field carries the main content which appears in the centre column and this is the only field where you will need to worry about how you enter text either using the WYSISWG editor in IE6 or otherwise using html tags around text as explained in Editing in html
- The 'General' tab allows you to change the name of the html file for this page or to move it to a different section by changing the folder to which it belongs
- The 'Resources' tab allows you to upload a pdf, MS Word or Powerpoint file as a resource which will than be available at the bottom of the page
- The 'Meta' tab allows you to add keywords or phrases - just separated by a comma and a space - which the search engines can use to find this page
Once you have amended the fields you can then use the 'save' link to make the changes and these will then be visible in preview mode which you can accees using the Preview Mode link at the top of the screen.
If you have publishing permissions, you can also choose to publish the page to the live site by choosing the 'publish' link which will first load up a preview version of the page for checking and you will then need to use the confirm button to complete the push to the live site.
Once you have confirmed, the page will go live, but you will be returned to the workflow page which logs the editing steps and from there you can choose Live Mode to see the page you have just published and find other live pages in need of editing, or choose Preview Mode to search for other pages saved in preview awaiting publication to the live site.
